Review: Wed White and Wu

Let me start by saying that I am going to try to my best to keep the Wu-Tang references to a minimum. Wait, no I’m not. As a self-professed Wu-Tang Nerd I’ve been waiting for an opportunity to analyze anything Wu related and this is my chance. Finally.

So quick background, when I was a little stereo, I was all about Busta Rhymes, Fugees, DMX, Jay-Z, Red & Meth…basically all the acts Def Jam was putting out at the time. I was never into Wu, my friends were, but I was more about the newer generation of East Coast MC’s.

Review: Economy

Those familiar with singer/songwriter John Mark McMillan more than likely know one thing very well about his musical style- it is completely his own and unmistakable. From his first album release in 2002 till the present, John Mark has produced albums with uncomplicated but earthy folk-rock sound, organically descriptive lyrics, and resonate atmosphere. John Mark’s latest release Economy carries on in this style.

Review: Dark Words on Dark Wings

Dark Words on Dark Wings

I’ve got to confess, this is my first time listening to the band Quiet Science. Before the release of Dark Words on Dark Wings, this band wasn’t on my radar. While it’s easy to start a review by saying “I’ve been a fan since…”, I think it’s more of a testament to their music that I was drawn in so quickly.

What is C3?

For so many years we’ve judged the health of our churches by the amount of people who walked through the doors. It seems rational to have a number that represents how well you’re doing. The issue with this measurement is when the health of the church is never taken into the equation. A large number of unhealthy spiritually dead Christians do nothing to move the church forward.

During the month of October, we want to take a closer look at what building blocks are needed to build a “missionally focused” church. A church that is so focused on those who need Christ, that we are compelled to serve the community. A church that stops debating the irrelevant and starts focusing on how the Spirit of God can transform a persons life.

The church is not perfect and never will be. But, what if it was perfectly focused on the mission the Christ gave us? Join us every Thursday night at Collision Coffee House during the month of October for our new series titled C3. Come be a part of building a missionally focused church from the ground up.

Review: Holding onto Hope

In today’s musical scene we are blessed with a variety of musical genres. With this variety however, comes a price… it is easy for any band to get lost in the mix, especially a newcomer among more established bands within a genre. Therefore, we as the listeners are propelled to ask ourselves what makes a band, and even more specifically, an album, stand out among the crowd?

Festivals, online advertisements, commercials, etc. all serve as promotional tools, but we all know it takes more than promotion to create a buzz around a specific band and/or album. It takes that special combination of artistic uniqueness, instrumental talent, and lyrical depth. Holding Onto Hope’s latest self-titled album does not disappoint!

The Cost of Peace

Thursday night during worship at Collision, there was such a peace that it could be felt throughout the sanctuary. We sometimes forget about the peace and rest that the Holy Spirit gives us because we don’t take time to slow down. Our lives are too busy and we’re being pulled in too many directions. Our “time of rest” becomes sitting in front of a TV instead of resting in the presence of the Spirit of God.

This peace is a huge departure from the events that lead to the death of Christ almost 2,000 years ago. We’ve seen the images that we’ve created through art and movies. We’ve read the account of Christ’s death through scripture. That day was the turning point for every one of us that was born into this world. That day was not marked by peace.

Episode 56: Oh Sleeper

I went to the Masquerade in Atlanta to see Demon Hunter and the reunited members of Living Sacrifice in early 2008. I knew what to expect because I’ve been to their shows in the past. At the time, a band named Oh Sleeper had just put out a new album called When I Am God. I didn’t know what to expect when they took the stage, but I got a great suprise by their great show and the band had such a welcoming additude after the night was over.

Years later, Oh Sleeper is still suprising me with the depth of their writing and the great music they’re putting together. For the month of September, we want to give you a glimpse into the inspiration and message that this band has. James Erwin, one of the founding members of Oh Sleeper, talks about the artists that have influenced their music, the stories behind the new songs and their brand new release Children of Fire.

The Day That Changed Everything

It’s crazy how vividly I remember the morning of 9/11 even ten years after that day. I woke up and I ran through my normal morning routine. I was excited because my roommate and I were hitting up Best Buy before class started to get some new CD’s that released that morning. While eating breakfast in the apartment, I was glued to the TV and the live coverage from the national news. With a couple of us sitting around the TV, it felt like a scene right out of a movie.

I was living in Atlanta in 2001 and was a twenty year old art student. Still to this day, the morning of September 11, 2001 seems so surreal. One of my roommates and I were trying to get to the college and the streets had an eerie feel. We got close to the school and were turned around immediately.

Water Fountains In The Church

Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by[c] one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.

Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body.  If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be?  But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.  If they were all one part, where would the body be?  As it is, there are many parts, but one body.

-1 Corinthians 12:12-20
